If you were around in the 70s and 80s, you’ll remember.
That trash bag-looking thing laying on your friend’s floor.
Shapeless and squishy, it made a strange noise when you messed with it.
Things became more clear when you sat on the thing and were engulfed by the vinyl cover and the chunks of foam inside.
This thing’s a chair, and a really comfy one.
The Bean Bag Chair – a 1962 product of three Italian designers what even was exhibited in museums in the 70s.
Convenient, easily tossed around where you wanted it, a relatively cheap by comparison, the chair became a figure in lots of homes.
But interest waned – until recently.
The bean bag chair is enjoying somewhat of a revival as newcomers and us old folks alike have come to appreciate it more than ever.
And there are few people taking part in the upswing who have discovered or rediscovered it than the boating world.
Great for lounging around in during a TV show, or even for a good night’s sleep, boaters and anglers have figured out its good uses.
So will your dog, either at home or in the boat.
You’ll especially find them in the bow areas of center consoles where seating is at a premium.
Settling in one for a long ride to fish offshore makes the chair about perfect.
Alas, like everything else these days, newer models are made with a variety products and come in different sizes and prices.
They can get expensive, but most useful things are.
So is the bean bag chair’s resurgence just a fad?
Hard to say. But when you find something that works well for you, you tend to stick with it.
One thing is sure, you won’t be in awe when you jump on the boat and see a few on the bow.
But you might have to move Fido so you can have some room.
