It happens every year.

Time wears extremely thin as Christmas zips into the picture and you have nothing for your favorite boat owner.

An expensive silk tie is nice, but let’s face it …

So what do you do? Online purchases are quickly becoming a gamble to see if things arrive before the big day.

The marina – that’s us – and several boat-specific stores can help the effort.

But nobody knows your boater like you.

So keep in mind, if you will, that this isn’t designed for the money-rich boat owner who can get anything he or she wants. No, this is for the boat owner who fights to keep up with the vessel while plowing through all of life’s other issues.

So here are a few ideas that would make my simplistic mind plenty happy.

Boat safety is a good place to start, mainly because these things are required by the state and a boat owner is always buying them.

Like a good fire extinguisher. Get one – heck, make it two because things happen.

Floatation devises aren’t only required, they can save lives. Smaller, air-canister, models have become more common and extremely more comfortable. And since a throw float also is required, toss a couple into the bundle, as well.

Every boat needs a good rope and its uses are as many as there are types of rope. Get one that can deal with being wet and will dry quickly before starting to go south. And if you think a certain length is best, buy one twice as long. It always can be shortened and used for a variety of things.

A boat requires – not literally – a knife to cut bait or rope or whatever a situation requires

There are a crazy variety of knives, but this is an are to spend in relation to the quality of the product. Heavens forbid it ever is used, but safe is always better than sorry.

And if you’re going to spend the money on a knife, buy a good sharpener. There’s nothing worse that getting cut because your blade is dull.

When it comes to electronics and fishing gear, leave that stuff to the owner. There is a maddening vastness to what’s available for both and boat owners and anglers have their favorites for a reason.

So you’ve made a few choices where wrapping is the biggest problem.

And whatever the case, the tie suffices, even though it’s doubtful you’ll ever see it on the boat.

Hey, here’s an idea – use that type to wrap the real gifts.
