If you’re beaching your boat, loading it on trailers, or navigating rocky areas, your keel takes the hit. That wear and tear adds up fast. A keel guard is a smart, simple upgrade that protects the most vulnerable part of your hull — and saves you money down the line.
Here’s a quick look at why adding one is a great move and how we install it the right way.
Why Add a Keel Guard?
- Protects the Hull: Shields against scratches, gouges, and wear from ramps, rocks, and trailers.
- Prevents Costly Repairs: Helps avoid fiberglass or gelcoat damage that can get pricey.
- Boosts Resale Value: A protected hull shows better and suggests good maintenance.
- Extends Boat Life: Keeps the keel structurally sound longer.
- Low Maintenance: Once it’s on, it’s built to last with very little upkeep.
How We Install a Keel Guard:
1. Positioning:
We mark where the guard will go, using tape to get a clean guideline and leave a 1/4″ space for sealing.
2. Surface Prep:
We clean with acetone, sand the surface, scuff it with a Scotch-Brite pad, and wipe it down with alcohol to remove dust.
3. Adhesive Activation:
Activator wipes go on the keel to trigger the adhesive. This step is key for a strong, lasting bond.
4. Applying the Guard:
We press the keel guard on starting from the center, using a roller for even pressure and a solid seal.
5. Sealing the Edges:
A bead of marine-grade caulk is applied in the 1/4″ gap, smoothed out, and cleaned up. Once cured, it’s good to go.
✅ Pro tip: A keel guard costs a lot less than a single hull repair — and delivers protection for years.
