Boating Safety Q&A: How Much Oil Should My Engine Have?

Question: Is it better to accidentally overfill or underfill my engine with oil, or to suddenly have less or more oil?

Answer: Ideally, neither scenario is recommended. If your engine is underfilled, the oil may not circulate fully, leading to underperformance and overheating. Overfilling, on the other hand, can cause the oil to foam, disrupting proper circulation. If you notice your oil level dropping, it could signal internal issues such as failing valve seats, improperly seated rings, or scoring in the cylinders. Conversely, an increase in oil levels might indicate fuel leaking into your oil—potentially due to running too cold or a fuel cooler leak.

Customer Testimonial:

“I just wanted to say a quick thank you to everyone on the Lynnhaven boatel team! From the ladies in the office to the guys running boats to the water, every single one is a true professional running a well-oiled machine. I really can’t say enough good things about my time in the boatel. The convenience of having the boat there is well worth it, but it was the staff that really made this place great. This crew absolutely crushed it this summer. I look forward to seeing you all again in the spring.”
