We know, this weather is getting more than a little frustrating. Windy, cooler than usual, tough seas. But some are in full use, while other boaters are keeping busy so their vessels will be ready in a few minutes.

One aspect of Mother Nature rarely considered are the critters that are showing in big numbers. Spiders, bugs, mice. And snakes. Virginia and North Carolina both are known for these fond-of-the-sea rulers of most of their world.

While the two states are known for nearly 40 species, only six of those are venomous and call the coastal plains their home. Copperheads, timber rattlesnakes and water moccasin (cottonmouth). Of the three, the cottonmouth – called so because of its white inner mouth – is the most likely to be seen around docks, boats and marshy shorelines.

Copperheads and rattle snakes blend in with nature better and are seen often. Cottonmouths, however, don’t mind being seen and like being messed with even less. While copperheads cause more deaths in both states, along the coast is where cottonmouths cause the most problems. Especially in boats. So take the time before you head out to thoroughly check your vessel for unwanted company, It’ll make for a lot more fun.

Oh … one more thing – there are no poisonous snakes around here. The three mentioned are venomous, a huge difference for how it effects a human. So take plenty of caution, and have a blast out on the water,
