Sea Pro Boat leaving marina near boathouse

Call it an early Christmas present.

The situation with re-powering your boat is very similar to the issues that go on with your truck.

Things start going wrong with the motor.

Once it starts making weird noises, drips fluids and loses power, mechanics can only keep it going for so long. The situation can cause more than its fair share of stresses.

So, eventually, a new engine is the only solution this side of trading in the whole kit and caboodle.

But with the truck – or in our case, the boat – still in great shape it’s basically an easy fix.

And who doesn’t mind a big red Christmas bow wrapped around a new engine that’s going to make boating in the future even more pleasurable.

While Lynnhaven Marine has dealt with several different manufacturers in the last 40-plus years, a recently established status with Yamaha has proven its worth and then some.

Lynnhaven is a “loose” dealer of Yamaha outboard motors and jet boats. The term means Lynnhaven is authorized to order a Yamaha motor and have it and/or your boat prepared for that new force.

So far, Lynnhaven is doing anywhere from 30 to 40 Yamaha re-powers a year – with engines from 40 to 350-plus horse power at a cost of anywhere from $5,000 to $45,000.

“Like a car, the engine has problems with age,” Lynnhaven owner Chuck Guthrie said.

Lynnhaven also is a loose dealer for Mercury and can sell Suzuki because it is an approved servicing dealer.

Lynnhaven has worked with Yamaha in the past, but the “loose dealer” category represents what Guthrie calls an exciting part of its power lineup. The Yamaha brand includes a variety of sizes and models tailored to complement an owner’s vessel.

“We can re-power any outboard boat with Yamahas,” Guthrie said. “There are lots of options available.”

Lynnhaven mechanics and Yamaha-certified technicians will collaborate rigging and upgrade digital controls to make sure those new horses work their best of your particular vessel.

Guthrie explained that adding Yamaha to the mix benefits the company’s customers.

“All engine manufacturers offer great products, but some customers have specific preferences,” he said. “We want to accommodate everyone.”

And the big red Christmas is extra.
